AV 52

Here’s an interesting one. This guy is headed oceanic with ZOA/134.15 and is calling himself ALPHA VICTOR FIVE TWO. Sometimes these two-letter-two-number guys are Navy, and sometimes Air Force, but he was climbing to FL360 and headed to ALLBE, so I didn’t think he was a single fighter out for a joy ride. Then he slipped up, calling himself FIVE TWO SIERRA MIKE, then correcting himself back to AV 52.

Any idea what AV means in this context?

The AV could be an internal flight ident for Sierra Pacific Industries.

Sure, it could be. But what’s it doing in a conversation with ATC?

Could be the flight number he designated in his flight plan.
