Updated my Orange Pi to version 4.0 from 3.8.1.

I didn’t spot the git commands at first :roll_eyes: so got errors.

Then I had to stop dump1090-fa (sudo systemctl stop dump1090-fa) before v4.0 would install. Errors about unmet dependency of dump1090-fa-dbgsym_4.0.

All working now. This is a test Orange Pi so I’ll see how it goes before re-imaging on the real one.

Followed @abcd567 instructions and it was present in the dump1090 folder.

But I suspect that it was built in response to the inability of dump1090 to install because 3.81 was still running. I recall the dpkg of dump1090 mentioned " previously unselected package dump1090-fa-dbgsym, etc".

The build process builds many things, but only one is to be installed.

My instructions tell to install only dump1090-fa_4.0_arm64.deb.

The error message shows that you tried to install the unneeded package dump1090-fa-dbgsym.

For me it only works when I execute the following command (in bold), following the answer I got.

That’s the one. Probably something wrong with the display then if touch doesn’t work. Have you tried it with a regular Raspberry Pi OS image?

No I did NOT try to install dump1090-fa-dbgsym.

The ‘dpkg -i dump1090-fa’ command built dump1090-fa-dbgsym, probably because dump-1090 v3.81 was still running. The error message.indicated v4.0 could not be installed because v3.81 was there.

Stopping v3.81 solved the problem. The ‘dbg’ in the name suggests it is a debug process.

This is a bit confusing.
The command dpkg-buildpackage -b creates the following two packages:

  1. dump1090-fa_4.0_arm64.deb

  2. dump1090-fa-dbgsym_4.0_arm64.ddeb

The dpkg -i command is applied only on the first one.

sudo dpkg -i dump1090-fa_4.0_arm64.deb

As far as I know, bove command has nothing to do with the 2nd package.

@obj may shed some light.

Still not necessary to install it. It is debug symbols only and there’s no dependencies on it. The only reason to install it is if you’re a developer needing symbols to look at a coredump of the binary present in the main package.

dpkg doesn’t care what is running.

dpkg installs packages; it does not build them. It also does not follow dependencies and won’t install anything except exactly what you specified (i.e. it is up to you to get the correct sequence of package installs to satisfy dependencies).

I think you had some other problem/typo and your second attempt avoided that problem/typo, and the rest was coincidence.

Automated Installation of dump1090-fa 4.0 and piaware 4.0 on following OS by building packages from source code

(1) Ubuntu 20 - amd64
(2) Debian 10 - amd64
(3) Kali Linux 2020 - amd64

(1) DUMP1090-FA

Copy-paste following command in SSH console and press Enter key. The script will install dump1090-fa.

sudo bash -c "$(wget -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/abcd567a/piaware-ubuntu20-amd64/master/install-dump1090-fa.sh)"

(2) PIAWARE

Copy-paste following command in SSH console and press Enter key. The script will install piaware.

Note for @obj & @eric1tran
In Ubuntu 20 & Kali 2020 repositories, libbladerf1 is missing from package libbladerf-dev. This cause failure to build dump1090-fa package.

I had to remove dependency on libbladerf-dev by including following lines in my install script for dump1090-fa:

cd ${INSTALL_DIRECTORY}/dump1090
sudo sed -i '0,/BLADERF = yes/s//BLADERF = no/' debian/rules
sudo sed -i '/libbladerf-dev/d' debian/control

Better to use a custom build profile if you cannot satisfy the normal build dependency (see the README)

I don’t have a regular image with all the drivers installed to try. But I have tried two of these identical displays. The other question is why does a mouse and keyboard not work either with this image?
