All my sites are offline and email revalidation

I woke up to this today.

All my sites were down including one several hundred kilometers from home and one on another continent. I am currently in Bali.

I can detect no email problems, possibly vindicated by receiving several notification messages from flightaware.

I clicked the big red banner and verified my email to no avail. Still everything offline.

I logged in remotely to each of the receivers and everything looked fine. Restarting piaware (sudo systemctl restart piaware) on each site seemed to clear the problems.

For those that are interested, all of this was done whilst lying in bed in seminyak using an 8 inch samsung tablet, Tailscale for the remote access and termius for the ssh terminal. I highly recommend both bits of software.

I missed my breakfast. The sacrifices we make!

My sites seemed to be on-line and this forum was working, but the stats page was reporting errors / connection problems.

For remote access and SSH from my Samsung Android Phone, I installed the rpi-connect on all 4 of my RPi’s, which provides both the SSH terminal as well as remote access using Browser of Samsung Android Phone.

PiConnect is a fantastic offering, but occasionally I find things that don’t work as expected.

Recently, I had a Pi that fail to complete a bunch of updates and required the: ‘sudo dpkg –configure -a’ before I could retry
This resulted in the PiConnect session being dropped immediately and the Pi rebooted.
Repeating the procedure by SSH’ing direct worked perfectly.

There has been a PiConnect update in the past few days, so this may already have been fixed.

We’re having some inter-datacenter connectivity problems today and there would have been intermittent errors while the failover happened. Should be mostly better now I think?

Running remote package updates under screen or equivalent may help, so if the updates kill the network (or your ssh session, etc) then the update doesn’t get interrupted and you can get back to that shell when the network’s back.

(somewhat related, piaware has to jump through hoops to avoid restarting itself mid-upgrade if it’s actually piaware that triggered the upgrade)

I ran rpi- connect on all my Pis to replace Team Viewer which kept thinking i was commercial. Mainly works well and is improving with every release.

But, there is always a but!

I run a multitude of OS that rpi-connect does not support.

I migrated to Nord link which was great but Nord abandoned it and i was advised that Trailscale was very similar. I tried it and it is brilliant for my use case.

It is a secure transport and i can run whatever terminal i choose. Mainly VNC and ssh for PiOS, Debian and Ubuntu hosts and an RDP client for Windows hosts.

There is so much more such as i can create a single host exit node at a remote site and have access to all the hosts on that network without having to adjust any other host there.

YMMV

Thanks. That was how I read it. Didn’t think you’d be unaware, so didn’t see any benefit in reporting it.

Thanks.
Having identified it as a minefield, I’ll put off updates until I’m on-site.

Cheers.

For the third time today i an getting the big red banner and an email verification check.

All sites that were resurrected this morning appear to be still feeding.

Well, that’s one heck of an install to get rpi-connect on the Raspberry Pi.
I did the install and then tried it on an iPhone. The display I get is similar to what you show on the Samsung phone. Are you able to scroll left to see more of the command line response? I don’t seem to be able to do that.

PiConnect is native in Trixie.
If you are logged into your PiConnect account when you burn a clean PiOS SD card, then RPiImager will setup PiConnect and it’ll be available at first boot.
I love this as my Pi’s are all headless and I never need to plug in a screen, even for initial setup.

Yeah I am also using headless Trixie and noticed that there was an rpi-connect already installed. However, it didn’t seem to work when I tried it. So I followed the instructions on the Raspberry Pi site to install rpi-connect again and also signed up for the Raspberry Pi ID. And that worked.

Sorry to drag this back on topic but again my stats page has this big banner.

I have twice re- validated my email but it keeps reappearing.

Is it just me? Any ideas how to fix it or should i just raise a support ticket?

Still sitting on a beach in Bali.

No idea if you are the only one but I don’t have the same problem.
It sounds like you have already tried everything I would have, so I guess it’s time for a support ticket.
Enjoy the beach :slightly_smiling_face:

To scroll you need arrow krys, which sre not available in the default keyboard of my Samsung phone.

To overcome this problem, I have installed “CodeBoard” keyboard and “unexpected keyboard”. Both have not only arrow keys but slso Ctrl and other useful keys. When using rpi-connect, I switch to one of these special keyboards.

Of these two, the “CodeBoard” keyboard is simpler and easier to use. I prefer it over “Unexpected Keyboard”

Thanks.

I’ll leave it till i get back to Oz.

In the meantime I’ll get back to watching the sunset over the ocean.

Here’s one I prepared earlier.

@abcd567 I see we had this same discussion about rpi-connect and alternative phone keyboards six months ago:
Reoccurring power outage
So I won’t continue to hijack this thread, except to say that I guess I installed rpi-connect for the desktop version of Trixie rather than for the lite version, and that’s why it took so long.

Yep +1.

I’m not seeing that issue.
I got some strange errors yesterday that @obj has talked about

I’ve got problems with my AIS feed to hpradar.com , but I can’t see how that’s related.:slightly_smiling_face:

You were normally on line, and feeding good, always at top, but I noticed you are “offline” today.

No issues with my site

My FlightAware instances are working but checking log I get:

Sorry, the log appears to be empty at the moment. Please try again later.

Logrotate???

Issue following command, then check log after few minutes:

sudo systemctl restart piaware
