Aircraft (Total) Count on dump1090 map

Hi everybody,

I am trying to compare two antennae that are positioned side by side in the attic.

The first receives a lot more messages/s that the other. It also has a (slightly) higher Aircraft (with Position) value.

In contrast to this, the Aircraft (Total) count is always at least 10% lower compared to the second. So it receives more message from fewer aircrafts?

What I find also odd, when quickly changing between the maps of the two antennae, I would have guessed that it is the first antennae that also sees more aircraft, so it is really is confusing that the Aircraft (Total) value is lower.

I am really pretty unsure how to make sense of these values, any ideas/help on this?

Ok, so now I connected the Pro Stick and antenna with just 1 connector instead of two, and changed the position a bit, and now this combination still has a higher aircraft total count, but also almost doubled the message/s count and the number of Aircraft with position is also higher compared to the other antenna. And not surprisingly, with more aircraft with positions, the map also shows more aircraft symbols…

And now things have changed again.

The awkward selfmade spider is still in its old place, the new FA antenna just moved a few inches to the left, and suddenly it seems both show the same amount of aircraft, but the message/s count is in favor of the spider again.

So, as a first resume, it seems spiders do thrive in my attic, getting the same results as a far more sophisticated FA antenna.

It sounds like either you have a mechanical connection issue (and moving the antennas changes the quality of that connection), or there is something quite opaque to microwave frequencies in your roof (e.g. brickwork) that affects which directions the antennas can see when you move them slightly.

Right now the perform more or less in the same way, after I changed the position fo the FA antenna. I also swapped the FA receivers, just in case, but that made no immediate difference.

I guess it has something to do with the surrounding building materials. There is wood, brick, clay tiles and sheetrock.

The small spider is dangling high up, from a small wooden beam, just a few inches away from the bare clay tiles, in an area were additional sheetrock has been removed. The FA antenna is close to it, but still a further away from the tiles, as it is much longer.

I just wait and see how this develeps in the long term.
