Is there any real advantage of using a Pi4 instead of a Pi3 as a feeder? I am currently using a Pi3 but have had a lot of issues (now finally stable thankfully!) but have been given a new Pi4 with 2Gb RAM so considering using that instead.
I’d carry on using the pi3. I have pi3b+ and a pi5, the pi5 runs a sdrplay duo and sdrconnect software brilliantly allowing remote access anywhere in the world for myselfand others, but for flight tracking it’s heavily underutilised and expensive.
I use mostly the Pi 3 and 2 or 3 Pi 2’s in all my setups. Never had an issue with those in the last 8 years. If there was a thing is was software related and not hardware related. I have an airspy running on a pi 3 perfectly fine.
Pi 4 can be utilized as well but for the things I’m doing with the feeders (3 aggregation sites, FA,FR24 and Airnav) and a monitoring system (Domoticz) it would be overkill.
But as always everybody has their on preferences.
I can also deploy Orange Pi’s 2+E and some thin clients (HP TC620) if equipment should fail. Until now I haven’t had that issue.
Only issue ever encountered is a power supply going bad.
Since that happened I’m only using the official Raspberry Pi power supply. No more problems after that
Well, I use stream1090, so I need a good CPU. I was torn between the 4 and the 5 at first. I bought a 4, but it couldn’t handle running -6 -24 on an Airspy Mini. I bought an RPi 5, and that solved it. I still have plenty of CPU headroom that can be used for other projects in the future.
My advice is that if you intend to use an Airspy, you should have at least a Raspberry Pi 4. If you’re going to use an RTL-SDR, a 3B+ will handle most of your needs.
From my point of view, I see no need to upgrade a Pi3, but if I need to buy another, I’d probably get a Pi5, simply because the price difference isn’t large and a USB-C power connector is superior.
(todays price shows a Pi5/1G is only a aud9 premium over a Pi3/1G).
On the subject of upgrades, there has been a tease regarding the Pi6 a few days ago.
Many thanks for the answers guys. Now that I finally have my feeder stable I don’t see much point in changing out the hardware so will stick with it and either use the new RPi 4 as an additional feeder and see if I can persuade friends or family to have it at their home OR use it for another project.
