Abnormal flying for A332

My aunt and cousins came over from England on Thomas Cook flight 104 from Gatwick to Edmonton, the plane tried landing 2 times in Edmonton, then the cabin was notified that they did not have enough fuel to attempt a 3rd landing so they headed for Calgary, weather was pretty foggy, maybe 1/2 mile visibility. Looking at their flight path, they made a very sharp left turn to allign up with the runway for the first attempt. I also noticed that this plane lost altitude very fast, at one point just over 4,000ft/min, after the second attempt, it gained altitude very fast too. Is this normal, or was this pilot a little agressive?
