AA 5 Tiger

Thinking of buying a Tiger. Anyone have one? What’s the deal with the wing being more apt to stall then in other comparable birds?

Awesome airplane, great performance for the fuel burn, relatively decent payload depending on mission. The visibility is awesome in the Tiger. The Tiger is a rock solid airframe. Don’t buy a 1975 Tiger due to a debonding issue that year. (The purple stuff) If you can find one with the Powerflow exhaust, that’s a bonus, lowers your CHT, and improves your climb performance.

The stall\spin issue I think your asking about is more commonly associated with the AA 1 series aircraft. I did my private training in AA 1 B’s and C’s, and my instrument training in the Tiger. Also, I got to deliver a bunch of brand new Tiger’s from the factory in MRB all over the country, what a blast!

Another benefit is the fanatical support from “The Grumman Gang” and a few other pilot organizations. You might want to join these guys while your thinking of buying, they are very resourceful and supportive.

Please feel free to PM me if you want any further information.

Tiger is a great airplane. The climb rate is a little worse than other similarly powered aircraft, but I guess there is always a give and take. Speed for climb.

I have about 100 hours in a Tiger. Fantastic plane, very fun, great visibility. Limited seat adjustment options and the free-castoring nose wheel can feel a bit “squirrely” at times.

Used it for everything from sightseeing around town to hauling friends + full fuel + luggage on 550 mile flights nonstop IFR.

It’s a champ.

Except for yoke movement limited by smashing into my kneeboard, it’s a nice ride.

My father-n-law owned an AA-1, nothing like the Tiger of course, which he wishes he had bought instead. Grumman is a fine builder, just check out the ADs. More importantly the recurring ones. They can put a strain on your budget. If you havent already that is.,

The stock instrument panel also doesn’t leave much real estate for upgrades or improvements.

Sorry this is simply not true. The instrument panel is the same size as any light single. I’ve seen Tiger’s with all kinds of gee whiz stuff

Agree, 430s, 530s, MFDs, you name it. They make G1000 Tigers now too, I believe.

When I was looking for a plane in 1998, I really wanted a Tiger. However, I was put off by the prices being asked and eventually bought a '74 Mooney C model for the same price as a nice Tiger.

You may not want to deal with the whole retractable gear issue, but dollar for dollar, I think you get more bang for your buck with a Mooney. My son was building time and that complex time was more valuable than the Tiger time in his log book.

None of this is to say that the Tiger isn’t a very good choice. I think it is, but you may want to expand your search. Lots of fishes in the sea.

or…a beech sundowner and be able to run thru your pre start checklist at the speed of sound, or a beech v-tailed bonanza if you want that extra umph, or…

That’s funny…Hey is it true that the toothbrush was invented in Arkansas?

Legend has it that it must have been invented in Arkansas, otherwise it would be called a TEETHbrush…HAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, now that’s funny.

actually…this is the only place, other than small tribal clans in Africa that I have seen depicted on National Geographic, that I have lived where sooo many people have sooo few teeth! I’m a true believer that this was the basis for the idea of “billy-bob teeth”. Just my opinion…I could be wrong.

Ive got one that I am looking at selling and getting into something faster. Awesome plane, low cost to operate and maintain. I learned how to fly in one and have never flown anything else.

I came oh-so-close to buying a Tiger, but opted for a Lancair 360 when I realized that I could live with 2 seats instead of 4, spend the same amount of money, have a stick instead of a yoke, live with it being an Experimental, and go 205kts on the same fuel burn as the Tiger.

If you want a certified 4 seater, though, my many hours of research leads me to believe that the Tiger is a fun airplane. I’ve spoken to two owners about it, as well, and they loved their airplane.

Trying to think of recurring AD’s for the AG-5B model and the only one I can think of is the 12000 hour spar replacement. I’ve seen one single engine airplane with almost 12000 hours and it is a Warrior (N2932X.) I’ve been out of that side for a while is there an airframe AD I’m missing??

Also, dbaker, saw your pics of 960TE, I’m 99% sure that’s an airplane I flew to OSH a few years ago for the display. Either way, I know I have time in that serial #. Small world!

Really? I have been flying it since it was new out of KHOU and KEFD.

Yup. I have flown almost every TE Tiger out there. There is one in oklahoma I haven’t flown. The one with the constant speed prop. I also have a bunch of time in the G1000 Tigers.
