# A map plot? using VRS and an RPI

Ive had my RPI setup for a few years and I used to have the VRS program running to allow me to get a plot to see how far I’m getting signals.
Did something change on how to do it? [FA discussion about it](https://discussions.flightaware.com/t/how-do-you-create-a-coverage-map/29563)
That was the only one I found and its 8 years old.

Why are you not using the alternative map produced by tar1090 and the readsb decoder (alternative to dump1090-fa) provided by @wiedehopf
With this combination you can generate an additional range plot on your map.

The tar1090 can produce exactly same map with dump1090-fa as well as with readsb. Replacing dump1090-fa by readsb is not necessary to have tar1090 map.
I have dump1090-fa installed on all my RPis, and in addition installed tar1090 to produce alternate map. Now I can view both dump1090-fa’s Skyview map and tar1090 map.

However, replacing dump1090-fa by readsb is necessary if you want the range plot that @foxhunter referred to and that @sniperdude says he wanted in his post.

Thanks. I did not know that readsb is necessary for range plot on tar1090.
The reason is that I never tried to have range plot using tar1090. Instead I get / view range plot using planefinder datafeeder:
(1) At planefinder website at [https://planefinder.net/coverage/receiver/97686](https://planefinder.net/coverage/receiver/97686) (Click on “Coverage Map”)
(2) In Local Network at `192.168.12.24:30053/viz.html`

It is necessary if you want to have a range plotted. That’s what the thread opener wants to achieve.
Planefinder can do it as well, but you will need a different feeder installed. Not everyone wants that. I am running a second site locally only without any feed. It’s in our RV just for getting the information which aircraft are currently above the camp ground.
