It is possible to broadcast 1090 and 978 from the same aircraft. There are some advantages to that as 1090 is a very old (WW2) based system. 978 adds redundancy and reliability. Also, 978 allows anonymous mode when VFR and below 18,000ā€™

There are some aircraft that are equipped with both 1090 and 978 Out but this is rare. There are also aircraft with legacy Mode S plus UAT. There are a variety of combinations of possible installations.

Yes UAT position data is used for flight tracking by FlightAware.

Just an update - In the US about 14000 aircraft are UAT(978) equipped, about 87000 are 1090ES equipped, and about 1200 are dual equipped. This covers all US registered aircraft.

Note: There about about 5000 early version 1090ES systems still out there as well.
