wonder if it has something to do with the lack of major hotel chains in the area, like hilton, or marriott ?

It's more likely that they are saving money by not having to spend an additional night in a hotel.

By not going the previous day it also means the players can (gasp!) actually go to class!


They actually stayed in a hotel back home last night, so it's not like they saved any money doing that either.

Didn't know teams were allowed to do that, as far as I know in the NFL, you cannot.

BYU once flew out to Reno on the day of the game several years ago. It backfired as they lost.

I see where Florida Atlantic is flying back home out of Birmingham, most teams that play the tide fly out of Tuscalosa regional, which is about 15 mins from the UA campus, why would they bus 60 miles back to Birmingham to catch their return flight, could it be that they are trying to save money by avoiding a deadhead flight from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa ?

Lol, now that I think about it, the Chargers in the NFL did the same thing at Arizona for a preseason game. What a disaster though if the plane breaks or for some reason, they miss the game.

Yeah probably cost. They flew into BHM and then JetBlue left the plane there, to ferry the plane from BHM to TCL would probably be close to 10 grand. Probably also easier for JB, don't know if they left the crew in the hotel in BHM or sent a new crew in. Also could be a JB thing with just not wanting to go to TCL.

Yep. If JetBlue is willing to let a jet sit at Birmingham for a day, you've saved a significant chunk of change by not having to pay for 2 deadheads to and from hubs and not paying for an empty flight from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa. Here in Nebraska, there is about 1 team out of the 7 each year that will fly into Omaha instead of Lincoln. They typically leave from Lincoln, but it is usually a deadhead flight in from a hub. Interesting trend so far... All 3 visiting opponents into Lincoln thus far have had the plane waiting for them for the weekend here (2 Allegiant and 1 JetBlue). In past years it had been far more common for the plane to leave back to a hub.

I don't believe Michigan has flown anywhere for an away game yet this year. FlightAware only makes the most recent three months of history readily available for a given flight number. It is unclear if Michigan will be flying with Delta on this flight number again this year.
