I would like to recommend you guys consider developing a webkit optimized mobile web site. Most sites are moving to this (iphone.foreflight.com, touch.facebook.com, i.wund.com, i.bkite.com, many others) since it provides the iphone UI and integrated capabilities (e.g., gps and hardware integration, google gears, etc), and *most importantly* works on other webkit based smart phones (android devices, palm pre, etc.)!! I currently have a G1 and use these iphone optimized web sites frequently. I find the capabilities exceed a native app, don't take up any space on your phone, and release cycles/updates are as seamless as regular site upgrades.

I am going to post this as a new topic under this group but wanted to inject it here for discussion given the relevant context.

I would love to hear feedback!

Sean

We recently did just that; have you tried it on your mobile device in the last few weeks?

Last week I flew on United 9 and tried getting tracking info with the FA iPhone app. That flight number is used in the morning for DEN-SAN and in the evening for BWI-DEN. For the life of me I couldn't get the iPhone app to give me a choice between those -- it only offered the DEN-SAN flight. Fortunately I had already seen the spiffy mobile version of the web page, and tried that. As expected, it offered both routes in the history list at the bottom of the page. It's a few extra mouse-strokes but at least it's possible. I like the mobile version of the web page on the iPhone (way to go!!!), and for tasks I've tried, I don't see any advantage to using the iPhone app.

Can you add registration to the mobile website? I have to switch to the non-mobile version to look up aircraft registration.

I've been playing around with the latest version of the iphone app and found some bugs. Push notifications don't seem to work for PGUM. Also some airports don't show up in the flight list (see screen shot). RJBB, RPML and RJAA were some of the airports I know for sure that aren't showing up.

Image

Some features I think would be nice would be able to edit the tracked flights in my flightaware section w/o having to log into the website. Also it would be nice to be able manage what flights push notifications are scheduled for. In fact I think it would great if they showed up in the my flightaware section.

Overall I like a lot of the new features of the new version of the app.

Just updated the app to v2.2 on my iPhone 3G running 3.1.3 and now whenever I try to launch the app it will sit on the blue flight aware screen for a few seconds then just go back to the phone's home screen. Ive tried rebooting the phone but the app still wont launch.

The v2.2 app isn't working on OS 3 devices. We've got an update to 2.3 that does work on OS 3 submitted to Apple, waiting for their approval.

Just performed the update available today from the Itunes store. The "Nearby" function is inoperative.

Working fine on the devices here.

Is it not locating you or not loading the aircraft?

No, somehow it is still your fault...

Apparently not locating me Mark.

All I get is a zoomed out world map. Even if I manually zoom in to my locale, it doesn't show me and it doesn't show any aircraft in the vicinity.

Same setup (32G) but it works for me.

James, any chance you were / are not logged in? I just tried it and it prompted me to log in with my FA username and password.

I can't recall ever having to be logged in to use the app, nor can i think of a reason for doing so.

Is having to log in something new?

Anyway, the answer is no in both cases. I'm not logged in nor was I prompted to do so when I initially accessed the app.

Going on memory, yes, you were prompted for FA user name and password on first access on at least the prior version.

Unfortunately I could not test my theory as the app seems to have a slight flaw! I could not find any way of logging out short of deleting the app and re-installing.

If you open another location based app like Google Maps does it locate you?

My 3GS OS4 is doing the same thing. There doesn't appear to be away to log in if the one and only "ask" is not utilized.

checked under settings, flightaware doesn't show up there, other than under location services, which I set to allow.

yes, google maps locates me. GPS is working fine.

I also ran into this problem tonight.. I had to delete the app and reinstall it to put in my new password.

On a side note, I would love to see a feature put in so that I can see the airline callsign when clicking details of the flight. Example, AAL-- you would say it as "American" or AWE-- is spoken as "Cactus". On the FA website, I can just hover the mouse over the flight and it will pop up the way the callsign is said over frequency.

Thanks and so far so good with the new updated app :D
