VFR / IFR flight with block altitude request with ATC COMS

Background information post129294.html#p129294

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PypOumkg2xo

Best flight any pilot can do especially when glass smooth air and clouds are involved :-)

Special thanks to the unsung heros of KJAN working with me to make a life altering event for somebody even that much more special considering I asked for altitudes that were not exactly best for the morning push of arrivals into KJAN and KMBO.

Any suggestions on how to better explain to passengers what I did in the video always most appreciated.

25 knot IAS - Slow flight in a Cessna 172

Comments most appreciated on this video especially on ASI reliability at these slow speeds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPG05Dz8P6c

I revisited slow flight in the practice area today

I will let the viewership be the judge and jury on actual read of the ASI since there are no speed indicators below 40 knots. Not videod, but GPS GS had me at 32 knots. Based on earlier flight experiences, I don't think there was any winds aloft (calm)

To my understanding the stall speed of the 172 is about 45 KIAS. The ASI does need repairs if it shows a steady of 25 KIAS you had to be going somewhere over 45 KIAS.

Correct me of I'm wrong- It's been years since basic pilot training.
There are errors in IAS over certain AOA that are not corrected for in the 172. I believe there is a chart in the POH that shows corrections for this error. But like I said it's been years since I've flown a piston single so I might be wrong. 8)

Why empty seats should never fly - Video

Today's flight with inside and outside video shots. Passengers are seasoned commercial fliers yet you would never know it in this video.

Video speaks for itself.

Flight to KJAN with approach controller in plane reactions with ATC COMS PART 1 - video

Last week, I flew with my sister and the KJAN approach controller asked if I was the Sundowner pilot. Few messages later, and viola, yesterday, he got to sit in the front row of an airplane for the first time plus experience his first GA flight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp8AYOoxtXI

Not sure who learned more about local procedures and how things magically work within the ATC system, me or him sharing this flight. This video contains mostly his reactions during the flight and how something as simple as getting ATIS isn't as easy as it would seem on the surface.

I took him to all the local airports so he could put a "face to a name" of which this part will be in the part 2 video.

One thing for sure, I am confident we will get more compassionate service from this one controller now that he has seen the other side of the microphone.

Flight to KJAN with approach controller in plane reactions with ATC COMS PART 2 - video

Continuation of the last video, 2nd and final part.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDupf1brLR4

Video doesn't do justice on how much was learned on my part and the explanation of the whys of the intricacies of ATC while things were happening from the controller point. One interesting reaction in this video was the controllers reaction to a request for an ILS 16 approach into HKS (opposite direction traffic) while I was landing 34.

I think every pilot needs to experience this one time

My last landing in this video was my best technically correct landing in a Cessna rivaling my Sundowner landings :-)

Slow Flight revisited - Video

Comments most appreciated on why would ATC reported ground speed **appear** more accurate than GPS indicated.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbQeMCbsP60

In video, you will see and hear the following values

0 knot IAS
14 Knot GPS indicated
2 Knot GS ATC reported

Based on when I panned out the window, it sure appears that the ATC was most accurate.

AI tumbled at startup. Video includes views of this in flight. It finally turned upside right during the flight, but sure forced the issue of altering my instrument scan while it was off kilter
