Hey folks although I use to live in Keyport I never really flew around NYC area. I just got my Sport Pilot License while in Europe and that flying is a different animal.

I will be around the Miller Airport and preping for my check ride PPL ASEL.

Are there any tips you folks could give me?

I flew in Bravo back in April (Las Vegas North) with West Air Aviation.

Right now I am an ex-pat working and living in Germany.

ATC, et al any advice and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Does anybody here know why the international widebodies that bring the dignitaries into JFK for the UN summit get moved to SWF? If they have to get moved, SWF makes lots of sense, since it's under-used, close by, and has a long runway, but why can't they just stay at JFK?

Also, is any of the transport of visiting heads of state from JFK to the UN done by helo, and is that something that you have to control in N90?

I am an Aproach controller in the NY area and I can answer any questions you might have about why we do what we do. or where is a safe place to be. or any other questions you might have. The way I see it the more you know the easier my job becomes. Im looking foward to hear from you.

atc1. Are still at it? I am planning a trip and am thinking about traversing the JFK bravo space instead of going around. I am flying from KMHT to KGED in a C-182. I would be going VFR @ 6,500 ft. Any advise ? I am very familiar with the BOS bravo space.

I know this thread is old, but I had a question when reviewing the NYC charts. I've flown in the Bravo here several times and am pretty familiar with it, but one area has me wondering. See here: http://bit.ly/oqbzvs . South of the Empire State Building to the south tip of Manhattan appears to be a large area outside of the 6nm LGA ring, and it appears to be only Class B from 1500-7000', and uncontrolled beneath that. Manhattan is bordered by two SFRAs though, with pretty established traffic flows. Could one in theory transit over lower Manhattan while remaining outside of Class B airspace? It looks like that's possible on the chart, but I've never heard it being done and most people treat the Manhattan land mass as being within Class B. Further to that, could one fly a fixed-wing over certain parts legally, outside the Class B, as long as one complies with 91.119b (very carefully, due to the tall buildings causing an issue for the 1000' above obstacles within 2000' horizontal rule)?

It's pretty tight and I think with all the tall buildings you might have to consider VFR distances from buildings.

Hey ATC1,

Is there any routes/altitudes that are preferred for VFR aircraft crossing the airspace? I often fly from KBED near BOS to KCRE down in SC. I'm typically flying a T182T that can't handle FIKI and must often fly VFR in the winter months. We typically try to cross JFK at 8500ft to be clear of your airspace before turning South along the Jersey coast. Is there an altitude or route that would make life easier for the controllers?

CapnKasper,

Not ATC1, but I've transited the Bravo at 6500 over Manhattan, North to South, on flight following VFR and been cleared right through with no vectors or altitude changes. It's also simple to transit at 1500' or 2000' down the Hudson river in the Bravo. You're probably not going to get a transition between 2000' and 5000' in the Class B surface area due to the multitude of approaches for the big 3 airports, but below or above that and you should be OK.

I recently flew the Skyline route in the NYC SFRA north @ 1500' and south @ 2000' (after stopping at KHPN). The top of Freedom Tower appeared a wing-level @ 1500'. Also, I was just in lower Manhattan a couple of weekends ago. There are numerous buildings that come close to 1000' elevation and many more over 500' elevation. Especially now that the floor is 1100' above the surface (not 1100MSL or 1500MSL), I'd say that maintaining vertical and horizontal separation from all the buildings would be doable in theory only, but not in practice.
