Since when does ATC check tail numbers against a list of stolen aircraft. Does anyone really think that happens?
Highly doubt it. But regardless of the facts in this case, would the tower or security be at least puzzled/concerned if a light single, not in distress, asked to land at LAX.
Every light plane driver that I know would not even think of mixing it up at Newark or kennedy.
Why? I needed to fly down to JFK to pick up a friend who was an AA pilot whose car was stolen in the employee lot - wasn't that big a deal.
If I was say, flying from LAX overseas for a week or more I would likely FLY to LAX instead of driving because:
a) it would take me less time to fly than drive;
b) cost me less to park the airplane than the car. Landmark would only charge me $10 a night to park a piston single on their ramp while the cheapest parking near enough to the airport to not be in Orange County is $16 a day -
c) no real traffic - LAX Tower would have me depart on 25L and assuming its VFR they just turn me left down the VFR corridor over LAX and I get flight following.
Yep - I've done it. I simply cannot imagine driving to LAX to catch a 6-10pm departure from where I live in north eastern Los Angeles County to go to Asia or even New York - it would take 90 minutes to drive that. Then park. Then deal with the shuttle to the terminals.
Fly to Landmark in 20 minutes. 10 min to taxi and then I'm tied down - airplane cover on and sitting in Landmark's VERY nice lounge until about 75 min before departure. They drive me over and its a very relaxing experience -
Been to MDW [which is Class C], BWI, PHL, BOS and a couple of other Class B airports - it is no big deal.
