The pilot and his crew are heroes. He has an impressive resume and background. Note: CFI Glider.

I can't imagine that is true. Maybe not hitting a flock of geese... but I'd bet that training for a twin flame out on takeoff would be pretty common.

Thoughts? Am I nuts?

No, not nuts at all. Engine out is definitely practiced at least at the student level, let alone in a simulator. That is what makes this incident look very textbook and 'practiced' as the interviewed passenger put it. It being a bird through the engine, no fuel (read: Gimli Glider), or the NWA B747 that departed KSFO, had a bird strike in one of the engines on departure, completely shut it down, and came back to KSFO just makes it specific. This was definitely practiced, and very well executed by the Captain and FO.

All Joking considered, I still would love to see another Salmon-Three-Salmon incident. :)

Do you really need training for a total loss of power? Nearest and clearest space to land.

Meet the Captain

I will take an old guy any day. I always look in the cockpit when I am unfortunate enough to have to fly commercial. If I can I also ask "have you ever been to 40 and said 'Dude'" I think I might have to get off the airplane if they ever said "yes"

Like the folks in the Souix City accident, experience and calm, rational thinking save the day.

The crash only happened a half mile or so from where I am. I saw much of the recovery first hand. Lots of NY Waterway ferries were on the scene as well as the expected fire/police craft and several helos.

You're probably not nuts but you are incorrect. Training includes single engine cuts but not all engine cuts on take off.

sully deserves a month in hawaii courtesy of awe. he should have all expenses paid by the company, although his 320 went in the drink, he save 155 peoples lives, and he definitely deserves any and all medals available to civilian pilot heroes!!!

I have to agree. And this may bode well for the B787 when it comes to water landings. I keep thinking of the video footage of ETH961 when it crashed into Indian Ocean near the Comoros, and wondering how the A320 or any composite aircraft would handle an incident like that (not the hijacking, but the attempted water landing as compared to a fully-metal B762).

I think it was a conscious decision where he took his plane. I bet he was thinking that i land this in downtown manhattan there will be plenty of people with boats that can get these people out of this plane. He is also a hero for being the last one off as it should be.

Born in Hoboken, grew up there and in NYC.

Now live in S. Jersey, which is like another country compared to Hudson County.

That Pilot deserves a Medal. Setting that Plane down so evenly unpowered took an awful lot of skill. Somebody throw that man an awesome party...
Kudos to the Flight Crew for doing such an awesome job of getting the Passengers out so quickly.
