just started a raspberry Pi flight aware and not seeing data

Sorry I did search but don’t see what I am doing wrong
i set up a the raspberry pi as directed (at least I think I did) however the data doesn’t appear to be sending
it does show the device as registered today but it says
No Active FlightAware ADS-B Sites For This User (kelleyfoust)
i did a piaware status and attached.

pi@raspberrypi ~/dump1090 $ sudo piaware-status
dump1090 is not running.
faup1090 is not running.
piaware is running.
no program appears to be listening for connections on port 30005.
faup1090 is NOT connected to port 30005.
piaware is connected to FlightAware.
got ‘couldn’t open socket: connection refused’
maybe dump1090 is NOT producing data on port 30005.
pi@raspberrypi ~/dump1090 $

is the dump1090 not running the problem?
if so I do I make that start when reboot?

I typed ./dump1090 --net --quiet and the stats started showing.
so what did I miss in the setup so that this would automatically start?

How did you install exactly - from the piaware sdcard image, or in some other way?

I used this site to load the dump1090
satsignal.eu/raspberry-pi/dump1090.html
I used this site to load piaware
flightaware.com/adsb/piaware/install

There’s a section in the satsignal page near the end about “Starting the dump1090 program automatically” - did you do that part?

Alternatively if you just want something that should work out-of-the-box and you don’t need to plug it into an existing system, Flightaware has a sdcard image here you can try; see step 2 here: flightaware.com/adsb/piaware/build. You could try this on a spare sdcard if you like.

would that work with my dongle as well? I was thinking about that but just wasn’t sure if I had to use the dongle specified.

It should work with any dongle supported by dump1090 (basically, anything with a 2832U + R820T)
