I know that by clicking on the google earth link when a flight has landed show the flightpath of the aircraft but (how do you know/where do you) find out where the routes are?

For instance with CWRLD2, BAHAA, AR15, BITHO7.

Okay, so it's a TFR on Disney World/Land specifically - nothing about amusement parks in general? If I wanna circle over Kings Dominion in Virginia (which is now closed for winter), I can do that - right?

...and nothing about powerplants? I thought after 9/11... talk about dirty bombs and crashing planes into nuke plants...

Again, looking at skyvector, there is a nuke facility about 3 miles west of the PTW VOR - no markings on the chart and no TFRs (that I can find). If I wanna fly over that, I'm good?

We all know he was just a good pilot, doing his job (quite well I might add), with the best possible outcome under the worst possible scenario. If the public and the media wanna call him a hero, I'm okay with that.

I thought there was some restriction on flying over amusement parks and powerplants, but searching the FARs I can't find anything about the subject. Looking at the Orlando area on skyvector.com, I see no airspace markings around Disney World. Can someone shine a light on the subject?

So the consensus is we dont love the jet, and i know i said i hate the fact that its single engine and i do, flying that high and that far on one engine is disconcerning. But what do we think about the piper jet?

Again im not crazy about the single engine thing but it does have considerably better number. what do you all think?

Airborne Express used to operate out of ILN. Now that's gone away (mostly) and they are running an MRO there. It's called Airborne Mechanical and Engineering Services (AMES)

They do work on everything from DC-9's to 757's.

So if you need a place to do heavy maintenance on your 757, give 'em a call.

All coach aircraft
Various models of one type of aircraft (probably 737 - it's a very versatile aircraft)
Decent leg room (at least 32")
No charge for the first two pieces of luggage; reasonable rates for the 3rd and 4th piece
Free peanuts and/or pretzels and/or chips on shorter flights
The above plus cookies and/or crackers on longer flights (over ~2 hours)
Service to smaller airports in areas with more than one airport in addition to the main airport in the area

Your specific flight today will more than likely have a slightly different route tomorrow and the next day and the next day after that, etc.

First time passenger in a GA plane - Video

I post this 8 minute video with the hopes others can share tips on what they do to make first time passengers comfortable on their first flight. Comments here or in the video most appreciated.

Video starts with me explaining the process from startup, to runup, take off, cruise and landing trying to keep things in "English" Video also includes in-flight reactions from the passenger.

Couple of things to note about the passenger. She is not a roller coaster ride and doen't like heights. Because of this, I modified my flying to half standard rate turns whenever possible and a steeper then normal approach to not feel so close to the tree tops on short final.

Interestingly enough, the camera doesn't show the "bouncing" but that was due to me putting in flaps and transitioning from 10 knots winds aloft to calm on the ground. Rather then explain "wind-shear", I just blamed it on the smog: We had very, very minimal turbulence, something seasoned GA passengers wouldn't think about but looking at her, she was kinda getting green around the gills.

Video also includes intercom and ATC communications with a "sightseeing request" from me to fly over my house.

While not her favorite thing she has done in life, she was ok with it. Given a "goal" to go to New Orleans, I think she would go, but to go boring holes in the sky, I don't think I will see her in the right seat.

There should be a checkbox at the bottom to enable the pilot/fuel on board inputs, then the green button in the lower right should change to say file and view navlog instead of just view navlog.

I get the Stack Overflow message in IE8; but in Firefox 3.0, whatever the problem is it overdrives the video in my laptop and keeps the fan running at full speed constantly.

I can't say for sure whether they were Deltas or not. I only got a glimpse of about 1 second of each pair of jets before they were out of view but I would have known immediately if they were F-18s or F-22s, which they were not.

It's possible that they were Harriers, since they are from the USMC.

Yep, those are Rolls Royce Trent 892's. All of Emirates 777's use the RR Trents except the 777-300ERs which use the GE-90-115B as it is the only engine available. The description says the plane in the video is A6-EMP and that is a standard 777-300.

There ya go! I think Sully wanted the same thing for his career.

Whenever I think about that incident, I wonder how many pilots would've made the wrong call and tried to make it back to LGA or head to TEB. We will probably never know. He made the right call, and now all of his pax and an untold number of people on the ground are alive today because of it.

Sully is good press for the aviation community as a whole. Everytime he makes a highly publicized appearance, the better for us. I hope the guy starts a rock band and puts out 10 platinum albums. It'd be a much better outcome than having read his name in passing in a few news articles about a horrific crash, and then forgetting it! ...just my $0.02

Is there anyone else having trouble with the filing function of the Flight Planning? I get to the screen where you choose your altitude, and there is no icon for filing the flight plan.

Suggestions, or am I just not seeing the icon?

I was just down in the South Beach area of Staten Island and saw a pair of Ospreys circling overhead. After a few minutes they flew north towards Manhattan along with 2 sets of jets. I couldn't identify the jets but they looked like delta wings.
The flights obviously can't be tracked here but does anyone know what type they were?

I have to say....and this is certainly just an opinion...I think he did a tremendous job displaying excellent pilotage and calm during a very adverse condition. He avoided catastrophe. I have alot of respect for him and his crew. However, isnt this all just a little overkill? He met with the president, did a Baseball opener, Key to NY., Larry King Live, and no doubt his biz venture has taken off very well...hailed as a hero in all the media venues, but when do the accolades stop?

It IS a Bear, just a version fitted for ASW duty.

Little known factoid, the Bears were so noisy with those eight contra-rotating props that they could be accurately tracked by SOSUS by both audio level and distinctive harmonics.

The 727 was no trouble at all to power back and AA and NW did them a lot. Don't need clamshell reversers to do it, the 727's with or without them could do it.

Eastern even used to power back the 757 for the first few years after they got them but stopped I guess due to the risk to ground personnel or damage with those big engines hanging down. Obviously much safer with tail mounted engines but it could be done with most any aircraft if needed.

From the airport maps like http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KJAN if you put the cursor over the plane where it displays the flight data and then click on the plane icon, you can see the details of that plane overhead as the click will take you to the flight data page of that individual flight. Now when I first looked at your link I thought "pah, that will only show me flights in and out of KJAN" but then I remembered that those are the blue planes and the overflights are the green ones!

My 'requirements' are different to other peoples as I track the planes on HF not VHF and my 'area' to listen to is the WATRS (West Atlantic Tracks Route System) area - basically the 3 points of the Bermuda Triangle - so there obviously isn't an airport to select as it's all water. However, with a bit of trickery with the map positioning and zoom button, I can select Bermuda airport and then zoom out from that which kind of works. It would be better if the expanded map was larger so that the green dots didn't disappear altogether when zooming out far enough to see the whole area, but I realise that most normal people wouldn't want a map of planes covering an area of several thousand square miles like I do . Would it be possible to offer an option for tracking larger areas, like ocean areas, where the dots are much more spread out? The maps only let you zoom out 3 times before all the dots are removed .

I usually rely on the "new posts" markings (orange icons) when I'm browsing on the forums. The FA server apparently keeps track of the last time I logged in and marks topics and posts that are newer than that.

Sometimes I want to check in briefly and maybe respond to a private message or a single post on one topic, but I don't have time to go through all of them. Or I run out of time and can't finish in one sitting. But then all the messages that had been marked as new, will then be marked as read the next time I log in, even though I never got to look through them.

So sometimes it would help to be able to select a date and time by hand, and use that instead of the time of my last login. Or to tell the server that this particular login is just a touch-and-go, and not to record it as my last real login. There might be other ways to implement it, like some "Easter Egg" trick or magic incantation in the URL.

I noticed the feeds were down as well. I'm sure it would've been interesting chatter.
I realize it's not a big deal and happens pretty often, but many folks called KDKA (local news) here in Pittsburgh reporting a flash, ball of light and then a loud boom at about the same time. I e-mailed the news to let them know that the folks likely saw the lightning strike on the plane as it was just about ready to break through the cloud deck. They wanted to interview me for the news (wasn't really my point of reporting it), but Delta and KPIT representatives denied the incident so it couldn't be collaborated.

Oh well, I've been on about 100 flights the past 2 years, and I'm hopeful I can go another 100 without it happening again.

I am assuming you are referring to DAL1426. It appears that the liveatc.net feed provider for KPIT Tower, Approach, Ground and ZOB Cleveland Center seems to be down since 11/04/09.

Yes, N106LE flew at least twice today, 11/6, and departed the SFRA through the PALEO gate. N4846G flew today also. There was also a Dehavilland Chipmunk a Cessna 152... None of these show in today's activity.

I'm a newbie to FlightAware.. Tracked a tail # to Boulder City after which it disappeared. Pilot has been out of contact with me for 24 hrs (very unusual). Have searched for light plane crashes in Nevada and California. Nothing. But I am terrified. Any suggestions?

Is there any way to hear the tower communications from Cleveland Center last night?
I was on FLT 1426 from ATL to PIT and we had a lightning strike on approach to PIT. What made it odd was that no lightning was visible prior to or after the bolt hit the aircraft.
I asked the pilot if that happens often and he said "not often enough that it doesn't give us a scare when it does".

Pretty scary experience. Ironically the local news station here reported that many people heard a single clap of thunder last evening, which of course was caused by the lightning hitting my plane.

Can you provide flights and dates?

We require a destination and ETA/ETE to create a flight (some VFR flights lack these in the feed from the FAA) in our system, while some other vendors don't. Fltplan isn't an ASDI vendor, so they're probably getting their data through another tracking company.

FAA preliminary report listed as Destroyed.

Looks like it could be up flying again someday, as long as

There is already an ignore feature. In fact, it's built right in on your keyboard. It's the key with a vertical line and a "V"" at the bottom of said line.

Any way you can add a Ignore this user feature on the fourm? So that when viewing a thread you will not see anything posted by the person you are ignoring.

This might bring back some of the people we miss, and stop some of the fights that we see in the forum.

Thanks guys (I know you'd rather work on flight tracking stuff)

He probably has some good pics of those times too I'll bet besides stories. I've always said I was born 20 years too late. Those were the days I read about with some these type of birds.

FlightAware doesn't capture ALL SFRA flights. Curious to know why? I know that FltPlan.com is able to capture these flights.

Likewise...growing up in Miami, they were a great sight to see to an impressionable kid. My dad would always make it a point to park over by thier base on Watson Island, by the Port of Miami coming back from the beach, and watch them do thier water t/o s. But I didnt know they had Albatrosses? I only remember the Mallards in thier fleet?

Edit: And looking back at the pic..thats definitely NOT a Mallard..but an HU-16. I know this becuase I lived near OPF, and the CG based thier HU-16s thier in the 60s and 70s. What a shame not too many of these babys left.

They'll probably bus into Lincoln tomorrow. Frequently the opposing team stays in a nearby town (options limited in Nebraska). Sometimes the home team loads up and moves out of town on Friday nights before their home game too. This keeps everybody out of jail and under control of the team.

This plane sat outside Executive for months or maybe even a year or two and was missing an engine for a good portion of that time. I believe when it crashed it had not been run in about 4 months. The pilot was operating it on a ferry permit but yet still had a passenger; a young woman who spent her free time at the flight school next to Executive learning to fly and hitching rides with anyone who would bring her along. She was survived by a husband and a young child (don't remember if it's a son or daughter).

The pilot was enroute to Wisconsin somewhere to pick up two more passengers and bring them back. Again, on a ferry permit. The bad engine quit and he failed to maintain control in a single-engine situation.

A very sad deal.

To my American friends, deeply saddened by such a tremendous act of violence against US troops, I send my deepest sympathies to those unfortunately involved and their families. From what I've read this Lady below, Kimberly Munley may have saved many lives and almost lost her own.

Kimberly Munley Police Officer who reportedly arrived on scene within 3 minutes of call and confronted shooter.

I said I would not mention names and that's why I omitted the tail number but it is easy to find that info out. But...........You done well !

Oh, And the part about the law suit on the plane is a fact. I was thinking like you on the insurance. I was serious when I eluded to him being anal about his planes. The only thing is, they are ot that great. Could not use the air vent on the left side UNLESS I was willing to replace it if the tube pulled all the way out. I have left out many many instances of petty things like this.

I've never seen it but it would be possible. The #1 and #3 engines had clamshell thrust reversers. The #2 engine would either remain not started or left at idle.

Fort Pierce Florida, one person received minor injuries and two others were unharmed after a Albatross crashed on takeoff at the St. Lucie County Intl Airport on Thursday.

About 3:35 p.m. N120FB Albatross blew its left engine just after takeoff, it was reported as just clearing the airport fence and crashed on Talylor Dairy Road.

The aircraft was en route to Okeechobee. The plane had 300 of fuel on board, approx 150 gallons leaked out of the starboard wing, and 150 gallons were removed into drums from port wing.

I saw someone mention in a thread recently that people who post asking "what was the plane I saw overhead at x" should search by selecting the map area to see what it was. Is this actually possible or is the person talking rubbish?

As far as I can see it is only possible to search by airport, ARCID, OPR or type. Is it possible to select an area of the map and that will then show all flights currently flying in that area? I would be interesting to learn how to do this if so as it would be very useful.

If it's not currently available, any plans for it?

Hmmm. If I were the CEO of my own airline, I'd do the following. I'd hire the best crews and pay them well to avoid my employees trying to unionize against me. Then I build strong relations with 2 or 3 major airlines and become their feeder service. Continental, United, or Aero Mexico.

I'd invest in the Embraer 170/190 variants and of course my hubs would be where ever my alliance airlines tell me to fly from. Then when things start to get sticky, I might fly some of the EAS routes until the industry was healthy again.

Mostly a tempest in a teapot. They should let a real news department handle stories like these. (If you could still find one.)

First wheezing about whether the plane was NORDO sooner than they've been saying. Red herring.

Then asking "how are we ever gonna know" how long it really was. Duh, maybe check the ATC tapes.

Speculating that the crew flew an extra 15 min before calling in, to run out the FDR. Fact-free unattributed speculation. Now really -- if you were the captain, would you take this chance if you expected the Tomcats any minute?

"The more you look into this, the uglier it gets." But the only demonstrable ugliness he mentions is the delay getting to NORAD. Every other bit of ugliness is cooked up in his own head.

Most likely the delay was an FAA judgment call as to whether and when the flight becomes a threat. NWA188's main symptom was being NORDO. Meanwhile, it stayed on plan, except for staying at FL370 too long. Nothing unusual happened with the transponder in that time. So it doesn't sound like any kind of hijacking or a threat to people or assets on the ground, and arguably the delay wasn't putting anyone at risk. When it flew past MSP, you might start to worry about getting the crew's attention before they run dry. So I'd like FAA to respond more quickly, but I don't see a big problem with what they did.

Fox News just wants a trial and conviction of SOMEBODY before the story goes completely stale. They don't want to wait a year for the NTSB to speak.

It was fun working prop aircraft, just because I was always interested in the turboprops. But as an 18 year old kid working ramp, when TW dispatch called and said we're sending you this or that, I was the only happy one there. The are a little weird to be around, especially a/c like the Saab where you crawled under to the running engine side to pull the GPU, the Beech GPU conx was in an awkward spot right at the back of the nacelle/landing gear well, and that engine was usually running when it was time to disconnect.
The scarriest one to me though, and as an FXer you might see these at some point or already may have, the ATR. The ATR when I started had a prop brake.(I think most have been taken out for safety reasons). The engine would still run but the prop would be held. For one, it made getting carryons from the aft cargo starboard side horrible, because the exhaust was blinding, but when you were kicking the aircraft out and gave the crew the OK to spin em, it literally took about 2 revs of the prop until it was at idle, where as normal engine starts take what, 10 to 20 to spool up. It was definitely something you stayed away from , because it wouldn't give you enough time to get out of the way before the prop was spinning at idle. I beleive this actually did make a victim of an AA ramper at ORD years ago.

They'd probably want to wait until after that to eject the canopy, and the seats a little after that. It seems likely you could get it all accomplished in a 1/2 sec or less, with margin.

as far as diagnosis go, 95% of my patients had 1 of Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking history.
85% have had 2 of Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking history.
65% have had 3 of Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking history.
and 40 % have had 4 of Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking history.
if you take out the ones that lie and say they never smoked, the numbers would be even higher.

This sounds like a serious HIPAA violation.
