It was pretty close. Listen to ATC's voice.

Did you edit out either your reaction or your passengers reaction? If you didn't I wonder how nobody had any "choice words" other then ATC made the right call. One thing for you to keep composure to keep flying the plane, finding both pilot and passenger having Iceman's type composure kind of stretches my imagination.

Most people would have said more then what you (or your passenger) had in your video along with other audible reactions (change in pace of talk, pitch of voice, breathing sigh of relief) that I suspect should have been heard when one is about to lose their COM antennas from a near miss.

Of course, if you edited it out reactions that may have been inappropriate for the video, my apologies for doubting what you say. I personally would have left all reactions in if it was a video I created as that gives the viewership a better sense of urgency you may have experienced.

I don't see why they need flight numbers so high. It's not like they actually have 5000 flights, especially with how many through flights they have.

In fact, all United operated flights are 1, 2, or 3 digit numbers, reserving all 4-digit numbers for United Express or Codeshare.

Delta, on the opposite side of the spectrum, is for some reason using 3-digit flight numbers for the Mesaba operated Saab 340 Delta Connection flights out of ATL, numbers that were normally used by mainline flights.

The 185 I fly just clicked 18,060 today & it's parked next to a Lear with 20.840.
I've only flown a few planes with less than a 1000hrs and they all had constant squawks.

But to answer the OPs ?.
The problem with that plane is: It's a Piper.
The only good Pipers have the little wheel in the back.

SOMEWHERE on AOPA's web site there is page for returning pilots and what's changed since you last flew.

Frankly, other than name changes very little FAR's have changed.

PCA now Class A
TCA and Stage III now Class B and C
Control Zones and ATA now Class D
Code 3100 has changed to 7500
Everyone has transponders and altitude encoders, not just the big jets.
ELT's are required.
Sundowners are still slow.
The biggest change in aviation has been GPS. If you used to ADF and VOR, any YoYo can fly GPS.

We don't squawk VFR 1400 anymore either.

Okay, excluding crop dusters 98% of powered aircraft in the US have transponders. Even gliders often have transponders. I never said anything about mode C veils.

I take the multiple t/o length advantages back--forgot that 27/09L/R are restricted to non-jet traffic take-off's only. Good way to sneak in though during a rush since they're abeam all of the FBOs/Hangers.

LVK has idiots in Pleasanton (the next town to the west) that complains about noise from LVK, even though it is several miles from LVK.

OAK is a lot closer to Chevron's headquarters than SFO. Though they say they are San Francisco based, their headquarters is actually in San Ramon. Depending on traffic, San Ramon is about 30-40 minutes from OAK while it is over an hour to get to SFO from there.

I would also think that LVK's 5200ft runway would restrict to some degree. OAK sports 10,000, 6,200, and 5,400ft runways.

KCCR, LVK, and SJC are the local fields that I know have strict noise abatement regulations.

Not sure anymore, but EDOs were the more expensive choice for many years, which is what allowed Wipaire to make inroads in the market.

I used to have a Founier RF4D, the only way to start it was to hand prop, you stood in front of the left wing, primed it once, set throttle about 1/4 in, set brake, and pulled 6 times, turned mag switch on, and one more pull started it, volkswagon engine (rectimo?) starts pretty easy

Chevron's G5 and GIV are based in Oakland. Cheaper landing fees and more space than SFO.

They operate an oddball fleet--GIII, G450, C750 and until recently had a Challenger which was replaced by the G450.

Flightaware hasn't been picked up on them yet but should by about 5:00 AM CST tomorrow. Example a BWI-SAN that will depart at roughly 3:00 PM CST will be carrying a 5418 flight number.

How good of a pilot were you back in 1970, were you just barely average, or were you pretty hot? That will have a factor on how fast skills come back to you.

My guess is that you probably didn't have a lot of experience talking on the radio, so you will spend some time in the plane just getting comfortable with that. The other is, you need to get up to speed on the new airspace designations and the new regs since the '70s, and to remember to call FSS for weather and what's really important too, the TFR's.
If your really serious, taking a ground school may be valuable
So many factors are involved that it's hard to find a number of hours it might take.

Also don't waste your money, or your time on a plane with the new high tech avionics, find one with the old steam gauges.
Try to find an instructor that shows a little patience working with you, he may need it, and it may help you in the end.

I guess you could buy a 40 year old airframe with even more hours on it. Like an machine, a plane that has been used more will probably deliver fewer problems than a hangar hanger.

A Lockeed C-130J Hercules transport plane, operated by the Italian Air Force, was destroyed when crashed and burned today, immediately after takeoff from Pisa-Gal Galilei Airport (PSA). All five crew members were killed. The airplane came down on a railway line, broke up and caught fire.

2) I have to use larger icons due to my bad eyes and the typical Windows mouse cursor covers the top left corner of a data block when I hover over it. Any chance the data block can be moved right and down just a few pixels?

No, airspace classification wasnt the same then as it is now. A Lot has changed. I seen the difference between 1985 and 1994. I cant imagine the early 70s. And I agree with a few posts from above. After a few hours things come back to you as far as piloting skills. But you most definitely should get back into the ground school part of things. Theres nothing wrong with brushing the dust off the "old wings". And picking up tidbits along the way to keep you sharp. I hope I make it to 72 and can still fly.

I returned to it after about 22 years. I hadn't actually gotten my license when I quit way back when, so it was pretty much like starting from scratch for me. I retained a lot of stuff and forgot a lot of stuff too. Lots of rule changes over the last 40 years, and airspace has gotten a lot less simple in the last 20.

As far as flying the plane and getting the hang of landing again, 10 hours or so sounds about right. But I think you'd do well to do a private pilot ground school course as well. There are some things you will have forgotten that your instructor will assume you know.

My take is that it will depend how good your eyesight, reflexes, and PATIENCE are. At 72 you should be just fine in all these catagories. My Father is 76 and I think he is just as sharp now as he was at 50.

Good luck and choose your CFI wisely. Make certain you are compatible before launching in to this. (I speak from a bad experience).

Learning to fly again, like anything else that hasn't been done in nearly 40 years, would depend on how much you remember from the last time you did fly.

Ten hours may be all you need. Then again, maybe you'll need less because once you start doing it again it all comes back to you. This would be like never forgetting how to ride a bicycle.

Yes, to the folks that will complain about my background, I admit I am not a pilot. But flying, like many other things, is a learned skill and there are some skills that people never forget how to do, even if it's been 40 years.

I just turned 72. Last time I flew was 1970. I think I want to get current again. The instructor I talked to thinks it will take about 10 hrs. I have about 300 total hours in single engine planes of various size. Anyone been in my position? Does 10 hours sound reasonable or on the high side?

I appreciate all the effort that has been going into enhancing the maps and interactivity of them. Put me in the "happy customer" category.

So with that in mind, the following comments are meant to be constructive rather than complaints.

I am using a 27" iMac set to high 2550x1440 resolution, so I'm pushing these maps to the limits I suppose

√ Hovering over specific aircraft to obtain their info requires split-hair precision most of the time. One or two pixels off, and it won't display.

√ When the map refreshes, it often re-centers or re-zooms and I have to go on a search & rescue mission for the aircraft I was tracking.

√ When viewing the maps on an airport's tracking page, the horizontal banner advertisement (usually flash-driven script) seems to make everything hang up, including the map display. Those ads seen to take a while to generate themselves, and all of the interactive data on the page is frozen until the ad figures itself out.

I spent a few nights there. I stayed at the Sonesta for the first night - a bit expensive for my blood. I spent the rest of my time at the "Travel Inn Lodge" which is on the north side of the airport which was a bit more reasonable in price. A 10-minute taxi ride to Maho Beach cost $10 one way (can't remember if that included a tip or not). While I did in fact spend most of my time on Maho Beach, the rest of my time was much like any other island getaway (shopping, gambling, dining, etc.), except I did not go swimming at all. Any time at the beach was spent at the Sunset Beach Bar.

I was channel surfing and saw a full-screen image of DL1085's flight track on my TV, and saw the reporter explaining all about FlightAware and how it's more oriented for the professional than a novice flight tracker.

The story wasn't about DL1085, he was just displaying it as an example.

Nice publicity for FA, and the reporter didn't even make any of the typical mistakes ("an Airbus 737" ... "a Beechcraft Citation capable of carrying 44 people").

For 8 out of 9 passengers on a full flight, 2-5-2 is better than or equal to 3-3-3

However, for that 1 passenger, it is much, much worse.

One thing about the 2-5-2 seating: There was a lot of controversy about this setup when Boeing announced the 777. It was considered a stupid arrangement. I'm just amazed that some airlines still have it.

There's been a lot of thought put into 3-3-3 vs 2-5-2. It's pretty interesting, really.

In a 2-5-2, there are fewer people in a middle seat with someone next to them on most flights. Additionally, with 2-5-2, only one person has to get around two people to get to an aisle whereas with 3-3-3, two people do.

People often travel in twos, too, so you can seat four pairs of twos "alone" In 2-5-2 configuration with one empty seat.

So let me see if I can grasp this as this NOTAM panned out as I somewhat expected.

22nd,

Runway open
Taxiway open and used for VMC or daylight only (No IFR operations)

23rd
Runway closed from 14:30 to 23:30
Taxiway open

24th
Runway open
Taxiway closed beginning 13:00

If taxiway is closed, how does one get off the runway after 1300 tomorrow?

My guess for the taxiway distance (which never changed!) is to give the pilot available landing distance and width if they were to use the taxiway as the runway.

My grandpa had a problem starting his v-tail Bonanza once on a cold day so he went outside to pull the prop through and loosen the oil (?)... anyway he left everything on and of course it fired up and taxiied itself across the ramp, across a taxiway, and into a ditch. He recalled later that it was such a surprise to him, he (obviously) didn't expect it to fire and came rather close to losing a limb or a head to the prop. It was awhile before that plane flew again.

the good news is, these Cherokees are pretty slick fun little airplanes and great for IFR.

Just received today's Weekly Aviation News & Photo Update.

Again, the thumbnails all show up in the email just fine. I clicked on each one of them to open them on the website. The very first one (in this case it's of the space shuttle launch) shows up, none of the rest of them show up on the website.

787 will be 8 or 9 across, depending on carrier preference. Initially it was marketed as 8, but some carriers went for 9 to improve CASM.

I LOVE the new sectional and Earth View maps as well as the "hover" feature. This is a marked improvement from the blue map.

One area of improvement is to make the flight information tags on the airport-specific sectionals (i.e. arrivals and departures from PDX,) a different color. Right now when one hovers over the 'plane', the color of the flight information tag is a light-blue color, which can be difficult to read amongst the busyness of the sectionals map. Is there a way to change the color, or bold the text?

But still a 3-4-3 on a 777 has to be uncomfortable, since it's designed for nine across, but I guess if it is marketable then by all means....

That system would be INSANE and any 135 operator would be required to land at a runway no less the 10,000 feet.
Not to mention you'd need to replace the breaks every 5 cycles.

And now that the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, the C525 series employ a very similar system. Otherwise, as 185 pointed out, all other 500 series Citations require manual deployment of their speedbrakes during landing roll-out...independently from flaps.

No Citation 500 series has auto speed brakes on a squat switch nor is there a mod for it.

Hawkers have a lift dump system that is manual activated and consist on spoilers extending and flaps going down beyond the full flight configuration like f*%+'n barn doors.

I know the DC-9/MD-80 series have ground spoilers that activate on a squat switch when they are armed.

The Falcon slats & spoilers DO NOT RETRACT ON THEIR OWN!!

Please don't make stupid statements that you have no real knowledge about. Flyboy is to young to have blood pressure problems

The pilot either retracted them during shut down due to him being German, a Freudian compulsion or he landed fast & clean.

You keep talking about the incidents: landing on a taxi way vs falling asleep/checking a laptop in level flight. What I've been talking about the crews and why I thought there has been such a huge difference in the way they've been dealt with. The NWA jet demonstrated neglect and can't be trusted. Why won't the filtering option box for "Hover for Route" retain the unchecked status? All the other filtering options do, but that one re-activates itself with every refresh.

These are professionals, they have landed 1000's of times they know what a runway looks like. if they were that far behind the airplane they shouldn't have accepted the side step.

I had the same problem with Chrome and Firefox. Apparently it had something to do with the default browser and popup blockers and I don't know what else. This is what I did to correct the problem. First, open FA in Internet Explorer. Then go up to address bar and right click and copy address. Next, open Chrome to a blank page, move cursor to address bar and right click and paste the address into the space and press enter. That fixed it for me. Worked fine ever since. Can't explain why but it did. Good luck.

I don't think it's the regulators. I think it's more for commercial reason. Canwest - the owner of History Television - also owns the National Geographic Channel. I have the feeling that this show may show up on the National Geographic Channel. Could be wrong but...

Hmmm, I hate that. On many of the News websites, I always get not available in my area, then they provide a Canadian website, and it never, ever has the clip I want!!!

The 777 cabin width is only 9" narrower than the 747. Shave a quarter inch off each 747 seat and 3" off each 747 aisle. Skip the double armrest in the middle of the four to recover an inch on both aisles.

By reducing the seat width from 18.5" in the 9 abreast layout to 17" in the 10 abreast layout and reducing the aisles from 19.5" to 17"

The problem with expanding around the world, as implied in the Questions/Answer (this link is available at the top right of every page here) is that other countries aren't as willing to allow air traffic data to be disseminated to private companies.

We can agree to disagree then, but to me the laptop excuse would be a willful act, where as falling asleep is more passive. So be it on the sterile CP rule, still can't condone arguing at FL37 though.

A Piper cherokee departed Orange county NY and was enroute to Danbury CT . The aircraft was found four miles southwest of Dutchess County Airport. The pilot of the aircraft was found dead. Sleeping is also WAY more plausible for a break in comms. Why else would they not answer ATC?

Hello everyone,
I have been looking in the forums for quite a while but i could not find anything like this, so i decided to post this up. I am not sure if FlightAware is doing this on purpose or if there is another site like this one( which i very much doubt about) that has airports around the world and not only in America. Being in Europe its still interesting tracking flights but its not that amazing looking at airports that are Kilometers away.
If anyone knows of a site as good as FlightAware for tracking European flights and has as much information about airports in Europe I will be happy if they shared it, if no-one knows any other website, then why doesn't FlightAware expand around the world as well...
I know it is a difficult process but is it ever going to happen?

I appreciate being able to use FlightAware and as is often the case you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. On my pc I am pleased with how it works but on my iPhone it is basically unusable. I am not complaining, its just the way it goes sometimes.FlightAware was not developed just for me and the world does not revolve around me.
I don't need a "refund" and I don't see why people have to get off of the subject just because another culture chooses to spell words differently. There are a lot more important things in life.

Some (Emirates, high density Air France/KLM) are 3-4-3.

I prefer the 2-5-2; no double-excuse-me when I have the window.

The original configuration of coach seating in the 777 was 2-5-2. Most airlines have changed it to the more logical 3-3-3 configuration

My return trip from Meridian last week with a little "Microsoft additive". Thought the music was quite fitting for the surfing over and under the scattered cloud deck.

Time-lapsing this really demonstrates how a measly 200 feet can make the difference between a rock solid glassy ride to light turbulence just above and just below the haze and cloud deck. Flight ends with one of my better passenger landings (touch of power in the flare)

First, ask yourself why? Why would someone object to having to press a button on an internet page for a flight tracking website?

Obvious answer: That person has no internet access when the button needs to be pressed.

The button needs to be pressed at or shortly after the departure of an airplane on an instrument flight plan.

Who would not have internet access to flight aware and facebook during the departure phase of an IFR flight?

A lot of operators remove the brakes in order to save weight since they will be installing a top notch set of truck horns.

If you've ever driven in the Middle East you know that brakes are optional, horns are a "no go" item.

I have never flown a B777, but I believe it seats nine across each row.

Is it a [3 - 3 - 3] format?

Or a [2 - 5 - 2] format?

The first one makes more sense since it is more evenly arranged. But I remember friend of mine told me once that he sat in the dead center seat of the middle five seats.

Does it have some sort of mod? None of the 500 series Citations have an "automatic" speedbrake extension system that I have flown, with the exception of the 525 series...but it has a unique system that is still manually selected.

Just so it's clear for the uneducated...there's a big difference between sequence (automatically) deployed airbrakes and "lift dump"...which doesn't always refer to speedbrakes/airbrakes/spoilers.
